Model U Naval Scout
The Burgess Company Model U Naval Scout was a two place, tandem tractor hydro biplane designed by Burgess. It was ordered in mid-1916 and delivered November 8, 1916 at a price of $8,000. It was ordered by Godfrey L. Cabot and the Aero Club of New England for presentation to the Massachusetts Naval Militia. There was one built.

Model U was a single float seaplane powered by a Curtiss V-8 OXX2 100 hp engine. Its minimum speed was 40 mph, maximum speed 70 mph, rate of climb 210 fpm and an endurance of four hours. It had a span of 45'9", height 11'2", length 30'6" and chord 6'3". The empty weight was 1,798 lbs, gross weight 2,438 lbs and live load 640 lbs.

The Model U served with the Naval Militia at Misery Island in outer Salem Harbor and was active in training and coastal patrol work. There is no record of it after April 1917 in the U.S. Navy.
